2. Apple Open Sources Its First Generative AI Model - Ferret

Dec 30, 2023 - Apple quietly open-sourced Ferret - a multimodal large language model. Ferret is a hybrid model that is capable of object detection and respond to user queries based on the context of the image and the input query. Ferret may be a signal Apple is working on the next generation of its accessibility features & making Siri more robust in its next release cycle.

Although it is Apple’s first foray into the generative AI space, the model can be a signal that Apple is about to get serious about generative AI as we enter into 2024.

That’s it for this week and this year. It has been a crazy year for AI and technology and we cannot wait to see what is in store for us for next year. The newsletter is currently in its early stages and will continue in the pilot phase for the next month. The purpose of running it in the pilot phase is to try and test different content until we are satisfied with the sections and the content to ensure you enjoy reading Open Sourced Sunday each week.

You can reach out to us to drop your feedback and request any sections you would like to see in this newsletter in 2024.
